Projects

In 1999, a devastating fire destroyed the stores of Holt's Furniture and warehouses.  Not only was lots of furniture lost, but the buildings as well. These buildings were formerly owned by the Seibert family for several decades as a furniture store. After the smoke cleared, a huge gap was left on Adams St.

In 2002, Sturgis Chamber purchased the burned out lots with a vision to change the property into an open air amphitheater and dining area. The Chamber, along with architect Jim Harmon from the Earl C Clements Job Corp Academy, worked on ideas to turn this area into something right out of the French Quarter in New Orleans. Money from Kentucky Coal Severance Funds are being utilized for the 1st phase, which includes the work of students from Atlanta and St. Louis  who came and stayed for 4 weeks to pour the decorative concrete. During the winter months, the students of our local Job Corps Academy are designing the decorative iron work to surround the area. The students are under the direction of Joe Walker of the Job Corp Facility of Atlanta and Jay Ayres of Morganfield.

The second phase of the project has been finished. The decorative concrete is finished, the decorative iron gates and surround have been installed. The next phase is to finish the walls and install lights along the walls and the stage. This work will start when the weather gets warmer.
