Welcome... to Sturgis, Ky. Sturgis is located in the western part of Kentucky not far from the Ohio River. Sturgis was one of the last cities founded in Union County. It was named after Samuel P. Sturgis or his sister Alida Sturgis Kelsey. The town of Sturgis, Michigan was named to honor Dr. Charles Edmund Sturgis, father of Samuel and Aldia. It is quite possible the Sturgis family is the only family in the country to have had towns named for both the father and his children. Sturgis came into being when the railroad was built in December 1886. The railroad drew the trade and commerce. Later, development of the local coal deposits caused further growth. With the closing of the mines in the past years, farming is now one of the primary vocation. Drive down any country road and you'll see rows of corn, wheat and beans along with cows, horses, pigs, and sheep. But, farming is not the only jobs you can find in Sturgis. You will find the usual grocery, drug, hardware, banks, restaurants, variety store, and even a golf course. Sturgis has many civic groups that help in the community. It is the home of the Union County Fair that has been held annually since 1948. It is held at the Sturgis Industrial Park which has the third largest airport in the state of Kentucky. The airport was built by the federal government in 1942 as an air-base for Camp Breckinridge.
